My unread count
The badge.
It counts what was published after this contact arrived, not everything they have never opened — and since says so in the response. A badge that opens at 47 on somebody’s first day is a badge they dismiss once and stop seeing; the number means “you missed something since you were last here”, and a person who was not here did not miss it. The list above still carries the older posts, marked unread.
